The scythe vs katana debate
I love fanmail.
It’s one of these things that make me happy when I get up in the morning and find some of you guys’ food for thoughts in our internationally renowned inbox info@press-start-studio.com.
Carlos sent us a couple mails (and comments on our blogs, and on our facebook page, and on our twitter too) because he’s very enthusiast about the nun using a katana or a chainsaw (and wearing a nurse uniform).
But before I bring this to the attention of my fellow co-workers at the next deliciously weird and exagerately long monday afternoon meetings (codenamed ‘Weekly Code-Graphics-Design-Finance-Business-Planning Round Table’), I really wonder about the relevance of the katana thing.
See if you ask me katanas are way overrated. Picture yourself in the street fighting for your life against zombies. Now would you rather have a stylish katana or an giant scythe in order to give you as much reach as possible and keep the brain-suckers away from your own grey matter?
Besides, everyone uses a katana these days. Take Highlander for instance, why would scottish Mc Leod use one of these instead of a more traditional claymore? And thus the filling scene where he explains that he felt in love with a Japanese girl who died in his arms and voila, katana.
Nowistanding my confidence that Bruce Willis would have picked a badass scythe if he could in pulp fiction, I appeal to your reason with this shiny new poll which may or may not be broken because it’s the first time I experiment this plugin.
Update: Aymar provided us with this really cool proof-by-image link, check it out!

I actually found the fact that the weapon of choice in this awesome game was a scythe to be very much more fun and refreshing instead of a katana or some carnation of sword.
Now in reality a scythe would be very hard to use against a horde of zombies as you would be constantly be in a struggle of having to pull it out of the bodies of the zombies… now a modded double edged blade on the end would probably fix that plus the awesome strength of our heroine nun to wield it with one arm. IMAGINE the power if she used both hands /hides
Indeed Kevin, and the perspective to pull my tool out of the rotting corpse of a zombie every time I hit is a discouragingly tiresome perspective.
However when applying the correct amount of force surely you can chop through the molting flesh with ease and cut it clean, thus taking out the hassle.
I think Kevins Idea of a modded double edged blade (and i will twist your highlander comment here … why not give the Nun a Claymore instead of a Katana ?) whould be really awesome.
And yes Katanas are way to mainstream these day … but hey the are KATANAS. Everybody has to love them
;P
My personal opinion is: Why not implement different Meele Weapons ? It would be really cool to have the option of playing the game again with a different Blade or like it was wished a Chainsaw (and to be frank … Chainsaw are the NO. 1 Meeleweapon against Zombies !).
Scythe was the perfect choice for this game. I know I’m late to this vote, however I simply had to cast mine. I picked up the iPad version several days ago and have not been able to put this game down.
The only thing standing between this game and a 5 star rating is the shaking mechanic on the iPad, which I absolutely hate.
But that has nothing to do with this post.
Scythe all the way… although the ability to upgrade the scythe (the visual) would be sweet.
Thanks for all the hard work guys. Merci bien.
It isn’t too late Roger, although mostly because I haven’t found how to close the votes yet.
Quite a few peeps complained about the ’shake’ feature on the iPad version and to be honest we should have seen it coming, so we’ll definitely adress the issue in a future update.
Thanks for the feedback, we’re sincerely glad you are enjoying the game!
